October 25, 2009

Today, the weather is very sunny, but there is almost no wind. The twelve Grands Surprises are in full sail. They left from the Vieux Port this mrning at 10.30. am after the briefing to go North to the Estaque. It is windward-leeward course, from the Rade du Nord to the Frioul. The US team from Rhodes Island passed by the mark 1 first, followed by the Irish team from Cork and the Swiss from Lausanne. It was the first course and the teams were quite excited. The US team is suspected to have crossed the line in advance, but the jury has not decided yet.

Beginning of SYWoC 2009

October 24, 2009

You have been waiting for one year, but now the SYWoC 2009 begins. And this year, it is set in Marseille. This morning, after the last formalities, all of the 12 teams have left the Vieux Port for the sea for a training race. The public was right here, and all of them were amazed by the beautiful location of the race village. It is set just in front of the Town Hall, the Hôtel de Ville. And you can when ylook at it from the street, you can see the beautiful Vieux Port of Marseille, with the ‘Bonne-Mère’, the Holy Lady Church, at the top of the rocks.

All of the teams took part in the training race, except for Japan, United States and Scotland. It is supposed to be a bad omen if a boat cross the line, and we don’t have only one bad omen, but four, as the Czech, both French, the English teams, crossed the line. The Czech team was the first. They completed the race in 18’59”.

But the day is not over. Tonight will take place the opening ceremony, in the awesome Villa Pascal. All of the teams will be introduced, then will be welcomed by the chairman of the SYWoC and our sponsors : Ecole Polytechnique, AGPM, Ville de Marseille, Marseille Provence Métropole.

L’édition 2009 commence

October 24, 2009

October 30th : “let us fly away through the fog and filthy air”

October 30, 2008

A bad surprise to wake up : fog everywhere and no visibility ! But be sure all competitors are ready to start as soon as fog will fall ! Stay connected for news.

Update 10.28am : competitors are waiting for better weather conditions to go for the penultimate day of competition. That is why we are currently displaying a StarboardTV show !

Competitors waiting for the race...

Competitors waiting for the race...

Update 11.05am : the fog has vanished, but the wind is still too weak to race. We do not expect to leave before 12.

Update 12.01pm : the weather is lovely, the sun is shining, but there is still no wind. No departure before 1pm. The crews are enjoying pancakes on the harbour. Agnès, the respo log, is always nasty with her teammates. I would be happy if she could take a boat and sink.

Update 1.06pm : still no departure for our crews. No wind ! But our girls do find something to do : they are working on their tan !

Sunbathing !

Sunbathing !

Update 1.45pm : crews are leaving ! I repeat, crews are leaving ! It is going to be hard with this weather.

Update 3.49pm : weather still cloudy and it is often raining on the race zone. Here are the provisional results of the first round of the day :

  1. Italy – Centro Universitario Sportivo Milano

  9. France – IUT/IST/UBS de Vannes – Groupe Atlantic
  10. Scotland – Aberdeen University Sailing Club
  11. France – X-Course Au Large, Ecole Polytechnique

Update 5pm : still raining. The Respo Com’ is sad and alone in the SNT. Everybody of the SYWoC team left him. Somebody to hug him ? More seriously, Agnès has just been to the toilets. I’m kidding of course ! Now, very seriously, we are expecting to see our crews coming back in only half an hour. I will soon have results of the second and last round of the day. The weather is quite bad and we can assume the crews are having a bad time on water.
