October 27th: sailing with the sun to begin the week

We are lucky to have a lovely weather this morning. The weather forecast is good, with wind NW 8 knots this morning, rising up to 15 knots this afternoon. We might expect a few scattered showers this afternoon. Visibility: more than 8 miles, less under showers.

The boats have just left the harbour, and the first round is going to begin at 10.40am.

Update 10.46am : the start signal has just been emitted. An helicopter is flying over the race. We will provide you with amazing air images.

Wake-up a bit difficult for the French and Scottish (Ecole Polytechnique) teams that cross the start line 1 minute and 3 minutes late.

  1. Portugal – UTL- Universidade Técnica de Lisboa

    3. Ireland 11 pts
    4. France (Atlantic) 15pts.

The rest….. who cares! These teams are running away with it!

    Rusty.

  4. Big Jock Says:

    Rusty,
Perhaps you should wait for the confirmed results before putting your money on anyone! Come on you Scots – Scots Wha Hae!

  5. Enrico Says:

I bet on italy since the helm niccolo bianchi is one of best helms in the melges 24 class

  6. hdd Says:

    come on cit!

  7. Russell Coutts Says:

    Dear Big Jock,

Once again, the Scottish, while most likely the last ones to leave the bar, will probably simply be remembered as “also rans” in this competition. Mr. Scott’s victory, while highly commendable, was a mere glitch.

The Portuguese, once again consistently up there, but we will see if they can avoid their characteristic Mediterranean hot-headedness when the pressure piles on.

I stand by my initial comment and am strongly backing the Irish.

    Rusty.

  8. Russell Coutts Says:

    P.s. Results (Provisionally) are as follows;

    1. Portugal 10pts
    2. Ireland 13pts

Who knows whether this will change though…..

    Rusty.

  11. Mafalda Says:

  12. Pepo Says:

    Go portugese, lucky victor!!!

  13. Big Jock Says:

    Rusty,
That is a bit of unfair typecasting about the Scottish – why I didn’t even mention a single sheep!
For your information the Mr Scott’s ‘glitch’ win was in fact two wins and here is a short bio to better inform you of my fellow countryman’s achievements.

Scott, 26, has won three World Championships titles, two European titles, the Scottish Series and the 1720 Nationals. The first and second World titles were won at the 2000 and 2003 Student World Championships and in 2006 won the J80 Worlds against tough International competition. Scott, a former member of the Volvo RYA Keelboat Programme regularly races the 1720 and Mumm 30 one-design classes.

Ruairidh has a 1st Class Honors degree as well as a Masters Degree with distinction in Naval Architecture and Small Craft design from Strathclyde University. Previous roles include spending a year with Yacht Designer Tony Castro and working as part of the design team at Elvstrom and Sobstad Sails.

  14. cc Says:

Hello guys, can someone tell me when this competition will finish? Is there any race this Saturday? And when are the teams leaving, Saturday evening or Sunday morning?

Thanks in advance and go go go Polytechnicians, you guys rock!

  15. sywoc Says:

Last races on Friday and closing ceremony on Friday evening. No race on saturday.

  16. paul durcan Says:

    go on cit,

  17. wind Says:

And I don`t know why you argue who has the best helm. They could be the best helm on the boat, and it`s no use, because the crew doesn`t work together. I`m also a helm but i think the whole crew (incl helm) is more important than just a good helm.
You have to do it together, not alone!!!

  18. bitoque Says:
